5 Stars No fuss explantion of soap making fundamentals
At first I was disappointed to see how thin this book was, I neglected to look at the page count before I bought it, but after reading it I was happy to find it gave all the information I was looking for to get under way with first time soap making and directions for further investigation. I am a newbie to soap making and would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to get a fundamental background in what it takes to make soap and some basic information on first recipe soap bases. The recipes in the book are stripped down, no scents or other ingredients to complicate matters, which is good to get a handle on your first batch of soap. There are several recipes each with different qualities so these can be used for future experimentation with other ingredients. I bought this along with ‘Soapmaking for Fun and Profit’ by Maria Given Nerius and would place Anne Watson’s book higher on the first time soap maker’s purchase list than Nerius’s.
All in all, a great book for the first time soap maker.
5 Stars The Very Best
I bought this book before I had made a single batch of soap. It told me everything I needed to know and led me through it almost as well as a live teacher would have done. She covered every step of the process clearly and thoroughly. And the recipes she provided have so far turned out great.
I also had a question about what type of a certain oil to buy, so I emailed her at the address given in the book…and received a reply within a few hours! I was so impressed with her willingness to help. Wow.
The methods outlined in this book are safer and easier than those I have seen elsewhere…I can’t say enough good things about the book or the author! If you want to start making your own cold process soap, or you want to update the method you have been using, this is the book for you.
5 Stars Start Here!
This book is chocked full of excellent, sound information for those interested in soapmaking. ALL the basics are adequately covered which should calm most neophyte’s fears. While there aren’t many recipes included, I like the author’s writing style and feel strongly that this book should be included in every soapmaker’s library.
4 Stars Smart Soapmaking
A good book. I learned several things that I will incorporate in my next batch.
5 Stars Wonderful soap!!
I purchased this book to make lye soap for my husband as he is allergic to just about everything and have been thrilled with the results! He even purchased a special soap dispenser to put on the wall at work so he could use it there. My Mother was hesitant to try the lye soap because she remembered her Mother making it and it was so harsh. But when she tried the soap I made, she just couldn’t say enough good about it. It makes your hands feel so clean and soft, you don’t even need lotion. For my first batch, I made the All-Veggie Grocery Store Soap #1 and was a little nervous but the authors instructions were so easy to follow. (I did use the Kitchen-aid emulsion blender and loved it) The second batch I made was the Anne’s Shea Butter Supreme with lavender oil and it was great too! Highly recommend this book!!

3 Stars Average book with some helpful hints and tricks
This book is not “truly amazing” as another reviewer put it, neither is it that bad either. The hints and tricks in this book use mostly ingredients like coconut oil, avocado, and fruit and nut oils; basically, ingredients and methods that can easily be found on the internet as well. I would recommend this only to those who really want to have a book for reference, as I did.
The writing style of the book is a little prosaic at times, and perhaps a bit shallow (lots of exclamations marks!), but I understand that in general, the “beauty crowd” isn’t all that intellectual and some can’t spell well either (just take a look at some of the other reviews on here for this book). (I am not saying that Shalini Vadhera cannot write, but she probably had to dumb down her book for the target audience.)
All in all, this book is average, but not something I would say is stellar reading. As another reviewer noted, it would have been nice to include more beauty ideals from other countries.
An idea: This book could make a nice stocking stuffer for a teen or young woman.
1 Star Nothing I haven’t heard/read before
I am extremely disappointed. I was expecting new, fresh, exotic ideas of skin care from around the world. Having read it cover to cover, I don’t think I found one idea that I haven’t heard/read before. Further, Shalini (the author) mentions her skin care line throughout the book, therefore, I can only surmise that the intention is to further publicize her online products. I’d like my money back!
2 Stars Not bad, but not quite what I was hoping for
This book isn’t quite what I was hoping for. I’m interested in the beauty ideals of other cultures and was hoping Vadhera would go a little further into each culture’s perspective of beauty, such as by providing a few pages of narrative in each chapter in addition to the “beauty tips and techniques”. (For example, how does what the culture found beautiful in the past compare to what it finds beautiful now?) But that isn’t really what the book is about. It’s a lightweight, breezy collection of face and hair masks used by women in other countries.
I found some of the tips interesting, but other advice appears numerous times throughout the book, worded differently. Drinking a lot of water, eating a healthy diet, portion control, and exercise are mentioned constantly, which of course are good tips, but not really anything new. Vadhera has a perky style of writing, such as “African gals say walking is not only a way of life but also a great way to keep their lean physiques. Walking around town is an easy path to a tight butt and strong, toned legs!” and “Avoid trying to emphasize all your features at the same time. Overdoing it may label you a makeup misfit!”
I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys making her own skin and face masks and is looking for more receipes. I would also recommend it to someone who wants to learn more about the beauty practices of women in other cultures, as long as they aren’t looking for anything too deep.
Someone who is looking to learn more about French or Japanese beauty may enjoy “All You Need to Be Impossibly French” by Helena Frith-Powell or “Beauty Up: Exploring Contemporary Japanese Body Aesthetics” by Laura Miller.
5 Stars MY BIBLE!

5 Stars For your body’s sake!

Gaining Weight For Skinny People
Gaining Weight For Skinny People

For those people who are underweight, it can be a challenge to gain weight. There is a high prevalence in our country to be overweight and obese and this means that there is little thought put into the fact that there are those people out there that are underweight and need to add pounds rather than take them away. To gain weight you need to be healthy and you need to consume more calories from healthy foods. You must also perform the right types of exercise so that you stay fit and healthy, but also gain weight. This may seem like an oxymoron, but you want to gain healthy weight, you don’t want to look like a couch potato. This also means that you need to eat healthy foods instead of high fat processed foods that are only going to clog your arteries and cause damage to your health later down the road. Also, for those young people out there, you should give yourself a little time. Some people are very thin until they hit their twenties and then they begin packing on the pounds. But for those of you who are past this point in their lives then it is not likely that you are going to be gaining weight, so there are things that you can do to begin gaining healthy weight. There are a number of people who are underweight, and this stems from a variety of reasons. Many people who are underweight suffer from chronic diseases or eating disorders. Some people are athletes or just thin people who want to gain muscle as well as weight. Elderly people are often underweight. As our body ages we gradually lose taste, smell and it is harder to prepare large meals and the result is that they lose weight and become thin. Being too thin may also increase a person’s risk for dying from certain diseases like cancer and heart failure. Many people associate this with being overweight, but the fact of the matter is that it works both ways. You have to meet in the middle where you are a good weight without being overweight. Elderly people who are underweight are also prone to becoming frail and suffering from osteoporosis or hip fractures. Men have an increase chance of erectile dysfunction. This guide will tell you how to gain healthy weight and to do it in a healthy manner. By following these simple guidelines you will be on your way to not being chronically thin and also gaining muscle as well.
